A Larger Nest...

21 April 2008

In July of 2007, I took a page from my Cousin Eva's book and decided to create a more formal "Court" and established my chivalric order, The Order of the Nightingale (L'ordre du Rossignol). Here is what I stated about my Court at that time:

From Wikipedia: "Nightingales are named so because they frequently sing at night as well as during the day. The name has been used for well over 1,000 years, being highly recognizable even in its Anglo-Saxon form - 'nihtingale'. It means 'night songstress'."

I use three main criteria when I ask someone to be a part of my Court:
  • Proven and consistent service to the Independent State of Caledon
  • Proven and consistent service to the Duchy of Carntaigh
  • Proven and loyal friendship to me, the Duchess of Carntaigh, personally

I do not require formal vows of fealty from the members of my Court. I feel that their actions have already spoken for them. My Court is a way that I can acknowledge outstanding citizens, more of an award on behalf of myself and my small part of Caledon.

One thing to note about how Courts are developing in Caledon: the State and the Duchys do have members that overlap eachother's Courts. Therefore someone can be a member of my Court, as well as my Cousin Eva's.

I have selected my Knights on the criteria above, with the added component of "protection". These are men that I know will "fight" for me - and when I say fight, I mean that literally or figuratively depending on the Knight himself. Everyone has their own feelings regarding violence, and I respect my Knights' individual opinions on the subject.

There are a few of my Knights that I know would physically protect me during a RP scenario, and that would serve as Champions on my behalf. There are others that would choose to "protect" me by speaking up for me in certain situations. I see both of these methods of "protection" as equally valid.

Today, on the second anniversary of my rezzing into Second Life, I would like to announce the following additions to the Court of Carntaigh:

  • Lady Diamanda Gustafson joins the ranks of the Carntaigh Courtiers
  • Sir Roberto Viking joins the Knights of the Order of the Nightingale
  • Lady Edwina Heron becomes The Countess of Swoonsbury
Dia, Eds and Rob - thank you my dear friends! For everything you have done for Caledon, for Carntaigh and for me.

The Nightingale

17 April 2008

I woke in the middle of the night. The moonlight streaming through the window into my new room. I was startled for a moment when I did not recognize my surroundings. Then I relaxed. "I am still not used to sleeping here in Coughton Court.", I said to myself.

I looked around the room, this spacious and elegant room in the Penthouse that Mr. Viking built me in the top tower of Coughton Court. So different from my room in my cottage in Caledon Cay. I will miss living in Cay, as it was my home for a year and a half...but I am also thrilled to be finally living in my family's manor permanently.

I stretched on the bed, sighing. "It's time. The moon is full." I quietly slipped from my bed and dressed in my gown that I had left sitting beside the bed...waiting for me...for this moment. I stole downstairs in the darkness, through the foyer and out of the massive doors into the garden of Coughton Court.

I approached the altar, which is currently surrounded by Spring flowers - the flowers of the renewal of life.

I seated myself. Breathing slowly, I let the music of the earth and the stars into my heart. I began to speak...

Hear me Knights of Carntaigh past, Knights of the ancient law.
Hear me dead Knights of an English tongue.

Hear me Knights lost in battle, whose blade did good.
Hear me Knights of old, hear me Knights of lost souls.

This night I invoke thee.
I summon thee to my arms aid.

Hear me Knights, a new cause be given.
Your body gone now spirit be.

Hear me dead Knights I invoke thee.
By your spirit blade I invoke you.

By your might I invoke you.
By your spirit I invoke you.

Come now, follow a new cause, I summon thee.
Each of thee I enlist.

I invoke you dead Knights lost.
Hear me and come to my aid.

Hear me and fight at my side.
Protect me and those I love from spirits' harm.

Fight our battles I say to thee.
Hear me spirits of Knights of Carntaigh, come to my aid, come to my side.

Protect me and those I love from spirits' harm.
Protect me and those I love from spirits dark.

I invoke you. I invoke you.
I invoke you. I invoke you.

I invoke you.
Let my army be done.

Let it be.
Let it be.

Hail fair moon, Ruler of the night; Guard me and mine, Until the light

The Eight Wonders of Caledon

01 April 2008

This being a contest where for a fee residents can nominate a build that they consider worthy of inclusion in the eight, residents can then pay a small fee and vote for their choice.

A plaque will be issued to all those nominated, and a more spectacular one to the eight holders of the Title.

If you wish to nominate a candidate please fill in the notecard given to you from one of the special vendors located at Hope Mews and Denver Hax's home In Eyre and scattered around Caledon, and return to Denver Hax before the close of nominations - midnight SLT Saturday 5th of April .

A voting board will be erected in the organisers front garden (opposite the Hope Mews) in Eyre, this will go active once nominations are closed, and a list of candidates and SLURL's will be dispensed from the posters and be available from the forums. Voting posts will be at the site of each nomination and at the voting board itself.

SLURL to voting board, nominations vendors and Hope Mews.

We are working on an honour/honesty payment system for the voting, as we believe that no decent person would deny payment to the cause of RFL. (but you will get a nice 'I voted' button/badge).

The Rules: (yes we have to have them).

1) The build must be in place or undergoing completion from the announcement of the Contest.

2) One person one vote per round, suggested donation 55L$ minimum, anyone can vote - it is not limited to Caledon Residents.

3) Anyone ( with the exception of creator of build and the organiser of this contest) can nominate as many candidates as they like (fee payable - 500L$ minimum), all donations are non-refundable so if it turns out more than one person nominated the same place, it's all to the good of the cause.

4)This can be any build in Caledon, private or Commonwealth, house or structure or vehicle that has permanent (per se) existence in Caledon.

5) The contest is open to all comers.

6) At the close of nominations an independent Arbitor will be appointed to judge any ties, the Arbitors decision is final.

7) There will be several eliminator rounds depending on the number of nominees.

Any comments or concerns please contact Denver Hax.
