St John Tea Transcripts - 09/17/2014

[18:03] Gabrielle Riel: Thank you everyone for coming out for tea tonight!

[18:03] Gabrielle Riel: I don’t intend for this tea to go the entire hour, but I said that last time and we went an hour.

[18:04] Gabrielle Riel: So let’s get moving! There are two topics I have for tonight. 1. Bayou St John and 2. The Virtual Pioneers Tour this coming Sunday evening for which I need volunteers.

[18:04] Gabrielle Riel: Topic 1: Bayou St John

[18:05] Gabrielle Riel: You have probably noticed that I have been working on the sim, but that it’s far from being done.

[18:05] Nola (nola.sapphire): That's the fun, right?

[18:05] Nola (nola.sapphire): ;)

[18:05] Holocluck Henly: an artist must not be rushed

[18:05] Gabrielle Riel grins

[18:06] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): truth!

[18:06] Gabrielle Riel: Oh man this is sooo different than what I would have heard in New Toulouse!

[18:06] Gabrielle Riel laughs

[18:06] Holocluck Henly: ARARARARAR!!! RAR!

[18:06] Holocluck Henly: better?

[18:06] Gabrielle Riel: Anyway it’s going to be this way for while, like a few more weeks. The reason is simple: my Real Life.

[18:07] Nola (nola.sapphire): Good reason.

[18:07] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): understood

[18:07] Holocluck Henly nods

[18:07] Gabrielle Riel: I have a great deal going on in my RL, including working on my Master’s degree and caring for my almost-10-year-old son on the Autism Spectrum.

[18:07] Allyah Nayar: back

[18:07] Holocluck Henly: wb

[18:07] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): that's incredible!

[18:07] Allyah Nayar: thankee.

[18:08] Gabrielle Riel: I knew it was going to be a challenging Fall for me and that has proved to be the case.

[18:08] Gabrielle Riel: Miss Allyah asked me about school prior to tea. I have one class that is turning out to be beastly.

[18:08] Gabrielle Riel: Well, the professor is beastly. :-)

[18:09] Gabrielle Riel: Just know that I am plugging away on the sim as I can. I hate that I am going so slowly, but I don’t want to run myself into the ground with everything going on.

[18:09] Swimmy Sandalwood: you will be the beauty who shines in his class, I am certain!

[18:09] Allyah Nayar: Nor should you.

[18:09] Allyah Nayar: This should be entertainment for you as much as for us.

[18:09] Holocluck Henly: you go where inspiration carries you. no pressure.

[18:09] Gabrielle Riel: Heh...well, let's just say after I got an assignment back today that made me feel sorry for my classmates.

[18:10] Swimmy Sandalwood: and let us know if anyone gives you any heart ache of the schedule, we will send them out on the lake in a boat without a paddle!

[18:10] Holocluck Henly: which course is this may I ask?

[18:10] Gabrielle Riel: Because (not bragging here) I'm the strongest student in the class. And if I got what I got?

[18:10] Gabrielle Riel: They must be crying right now.

[18:10] Swimmy Sandalwood: oh my!

[18:11] Gabrielle Riel: "Distance Learning" is the class.

[18:11] Holocluck Henly: interesting

[18:11] Gabrielle Riel: That’s basically it. The sim is taking longer to prep than I wanted due to my schedule. I’m going to focus on it as much as I can so it’s ready in the next few weeks.

[18:12] Gabrielle Riel: (I actually joined SL to look at it for an application for distance learning) :-)

[18:12] Gabrielle Riel: I got a little...distracted ;-)

[18:12] Swimmy Sandalwood: ha!

[18:12] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): hehehehe

[18:12] Gabrielle Riel grins

[18:12] Holocluck Henly: if sl is anything it's a great place for it

[18:12] Gabrielle Riel: Does anyone have any questions regarding Bayou St John?

[18:12] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee) whispers: distraction...yes

[18:13] Swimmy Sandalwood: no no, not me

[18:13] Gabrielle Riel: If you would like a parcel there, let me know

[18:13] Gabrielle Riel: I am keeping a list of folks for the sim

[18:13] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): well i am guessing it will be for wealthier people than myself

[18:13] Holocluck Henly: depends on the size of the parcel

[18:14] Swimmy Sandalwood: I'm attempting ... attempting! to keep my parcel addiction in check ... laughs

[18:14] Nola (nola.sapphire) laughs

[18:14] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): hahahaha

[18:14] Nola (nola.sapphire): I hear that!

[18:14] Ravenstask Bayn: lol

[18:14] Gabrielle Riel: It's going to have everything from 256 sq. m. parcels to 2048 sq. m.

[18:14] Gabrielle Riel: All sizes

[18:15] Gabrielle Riel: Ok - Topic 2: The Virtual Pioneers

[18:15] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): i am pretty stuck on my apartment though

[18:15] Gabrielle Riel: There is a group called The Virtual Pioneers that is coming to St John this Sunday the 21st from 5-6pm SLT for a tour of the St John Parish sim, and I need help with making the tour happen!

[18:16] NicoleX Moonwall: what couldd i do to help

[18:16] Gabrielle Riel: Hang tight - I'll be explaining

[18:16] Gabrielle Riel: I need resident volunteers for the tour. I do not have a specific number of volunteers in mind. I will basically take any help I can get and I will assign tasks to every person that volunteers!

[18:17] Holocluck Henly: what does this involve?

[18:17] Gabrielle Riel: Hang tight - I'll be explaining :-)

[18:17] Gabrielle Riel: The Virtual Pioneers is “is a group of historically-minded educators that enjoy using Virtual Environments to learn and explore.” I got that definition directly off their website. (http://virtualpioneers.weebly.com)

[18:18] Gabrielle Riel: They visit and tour historically based sims in Second Life. They contacted me in the Spring to book a tour here for this coming Sunday. The tour is only for the St John Parish sim.

[18:18] Gabrielle Riel: The tour will also be done in text in main chat, with the exception of the very end of the tour, which I will take care of.

[18:19] Gabrielle Riel: The tour is an hour, which really is not *that* much time when we are talking about St John. There are so many details here, we could tour for hours.

[18:19] Gabrielle Riel: So, I have come up with an idea that I think will work well within an hour and that will have enough variety to really engage their interest.

[18:19] Gabrielle Riel: Have any of you ever been to Colonial Williamsburg? Other places probably do this too, but the memory of what I saw in Williamsburg is what sparked my idea for the tour here.

[18:19] Holocluck Henly: hopefully they arent hardasses for historical accuracy. we have a satchmeaux square before he was famous of we took the 1914 premise literally

[18:20] Holocluck Henly: of = if

[18:20] Holocluck Henly: colonial williamsburg dont the locals make believe they dont know what a tv or cellphone are etc?

[18:20] Swimmy Sandalwood: Yes, I have been there

[18:20] Gabrielle Riel: In Williamsburg, they have people dressed in historic attire who act as the “presenter” for each location or house. You walk around, go into a house and that “presenter” tells you a little bit about the history of that house and/or site.

[18:21] Gabrielle Riel: Now, they actually "roleplay", heavy duty. That is NOT my intent for here.

[18:21] Emmanuelle Huntress: They have some hard 1st person folks, and a handler who takes care of the 'cellphone questions"

[18:21] Holocluck Henly: ah so light role play on the origins of one's café or drawing room etc

[18:21] NicoleX Moonwall: i too,spent a week there,lovely

[18:22] Gabrielle Riel: I saw some that did not RP at all, they were like current day museum tour guides dressed in 17th century clothes

[18:22] Holocluck Henly: no doubt many people have some backstory for their places.

[18:22] Gabrielle Riel: That’s sort of what I want to do here, although not with individual buildings. I want to do it with different areas of the sim.

[18:22] Holocluck Henly: What about Herr Baron or a representative?

[18:23] Swimmy Sandalwood: will you have formatted notecards for these certain areas you wish us to say?

[18:23] Gabrielle Riel: Here are the "sites" around the sim that I have thought of thus far. Duchess Square (which represents Jackson Square), the docks, the cemetery, the Northern edge of the sim that looks out on Lake St John (which represents Lake Pontchartrain) and Satchmeaux Square (which represents the Garden District).

[18:24] Gabrielle Riel: (Hang tight Miss Swimmy - I'll be explaining :-) )

[18:24] Swimmy Sandalwood: :)

[18:24] Gabrielle Riel: I would like to assign a resident to be at each of these locations. I will then bring the tour attendees around to each one.

[18:25] Nola (nola.sapphire): I'm sorry, I won't be around Sunday. RL beckons.

[18:25] Gabrielle Riel: np

[18:25] Gabrielle Riel: Once there, I want the resident to explain what the name of that location is in St John and what its RL equivalent is. Then I want the resident to give a brief description of the history of the RL site. When I say brief, I mean 4-6 lines of text at most.

[18:26] Gabrielle Riel: In order to make my life easier, I will need each resident to write their own 4-6 lines. Go online, to Wikipedia or whatever and write up a description and a historical fact or two about it. This is *not* meant to be an in depth history lecture. If the tour attendees have questions, I can handle any that are “hard”.

[18:26] Gabrielle Riel: (yes, Miz Gabi is assigning homework :-) )

[18:26] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): ok honestly i cannot do this

[18:26] Holocluck Henly: I wish it were friday LOL

[18:26] Gabrielle Riel: You don't have to

[18:27] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): there are reasons i would rather not get into

[18:27] Gabrielle Riel: But a lot of you guys know a *lot* about NOLA! If there is one of the sites that you happen to know a lot about in RL? I’ll assign you to it on the tour.

[18:27] Swimmy Sandalwood: well, count me in, can I do the cemetery? smiles and winks

[18:27] Swimmy Sandalwood: I'd just need to now which of the 45 cemeteries I am researching

[18:27] Gabrielle Riel: This is for people who volunteer. It's NOT required.

[18:27] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): i want to take the tour too and learn

[18:27] Gabrielle Riel: I'd want you to do St Louis #1 Swimmy

[18:28] Gabrielle Riel: But mention the others exist

[18:28] Swimmy Sandalwood: alright, St Louis #1 it is!

[18:28] Swimmy Sandalwood: yes, I can do that too

[18:28] Gabrielle Riel: I’ll bring them to you, introduce you and then you give your spiel. I will then move us to the next location. And you can come with us. Once we’ve passed your site, you do not have to stay there. Please join the walking tour.

[18:28] Gabrielle Riel: Don’t be afraid to do this. If your site is something new to you and you feel nervous about being asked questions to which you do not have the answers, I will step up and back you up with extra information if they require it.

[18:29] Holocluck Henly: A friend and I walked the NT cemetery last year and we were very fascinated the purposes people find for taking cemetery plots. we originally thought it was some makout spot for vampires.

[18:29] Gabrielle Riel: I will *not* hang you out to dry in front of a tour group. I am the person ultimately responsible for the tour, and if they go off on a tangent, or ask deeper questions, I’ll reel them back in.

[18:29] Swimmy Sandalwood: prims! cemetery prims! laughs

[18:29] Gabrielle Riel: I am your safety net. You can not "fail". :-)

[18:30] Holocluck Henly: actually memorials for former loved ones in SL and RL and for "exes"

[18:30] Gabrielle Riel: After we complete the tour of all the sites, I will take everyone to The Nightingale and there I will do what I do best, put on a show/event. :-)

[18:30] Holocluck Henly: probably some prims too but barely any

[18:30] Swimmy Sandalwood: I jest, Holo .. laughs

[18:30] Holocluck Henly: lol i know those things cant give you much

[18:30] Gabrielle Riel: I am going to play about 30 minutes of music, “The Early Jazz of New Orleans”. We can sit, drink, dance, basically make the guests feel like they are in a New Orleans club 100 years ago. It does not have to be roleplay. Let’s just be ourselves. Friendly. Folks who enjoy a good time. Be the fabulous St Johnians that we are!

[18:30] Swimmy Sandalwood: wow! this sounds great, Gabrielle

[18:31] Holocluck Henly: Sundays are nuts for me. I cant even come to the music :(

[18:31] Holocluck Henly: Miz Gabi knows I show up the final half hour of her swing night

[18:31] Swimmy Sandalwood: well, I'm not getting my goat castrated this week, so I'm free this week!

[18:31] Gabrielle Riel: So, I am estimating 30 minutes for the walking tour, going from site to site. Then 30 minutes for The Nightingale. If the walking tour goes longer than 30 minutes? No big deal. I’ll just push the music event back.

[18:31] Gabrielle Riel: Good to know Swimmy ;-)

[18:32] Swimmy Sandalwood: winks

[18:32] Gabrielle Riel: If we need to communicate during the tour, we’ll use the Riel Estates Residents group chat. That’s where we’ll keep the “behind the scenes” action.

[18:32] Swimmy Sandalwood: its a true story this time, no jesting on the goat

[18:32] Gabrielle Riel: Oh I had a feeling it was true.

[18:32] Swimmy Sandalwood: smiles

[18:32] Roooby (rubyowl.azalee): smiles at swimmy

[18:33] Gabrielle Riel: Here the next steps:

[18:33] Gabrielle Riel: I need volunteers! Please contact me ASAP if you are willing to be a “site presenter”. Email and notecard are best, or an IM while I am online.

[18:33] Holocluck Henly: no wonder they scream like that (re youtube videos)

[18:33] Gabrielle Riel: (I have Swimmy down for Cemetery)

[18:33] Swimmy Sandalwood: yep yep confirmed

[18:33] Gabrielle Riel: If you have a site you would like to be assigned to, let me know! Otherwise I will assign one to you.

[18:33] Gabrielle Riel: Do whatever research you need to do, then send me your 4-6 lines in a notecard so I can review them. I’ll send it back to you with either “ok!” or recommended changes.

[18:34] Gabrielle Riel: I’ll send everyone a notecard on Sunday afternoon with the order of the sites to visit. And again, we’ll have the Riel Estates Residents chat where we can communicate and I can announce that we are on the move.

[18:34] Swimmy Sandalwood: oh Holo, this is my first goat castration, I had to reschedule because my husband got an emergency meeting, and I'm too chicken to be there alone for it .. dehorning was bad enough for me!

[18:35] Gabrielle Riel: I am going to be out of town in RL from Friday night until Sunday afternoon. However I will be checking email and SL messages from time to time, so don’t hesitate to contact me.

[18:35] Gabrielle Riel: We have some natural "hams" here in town, and this is something they'd enjoy.

[18:36] Swimmy Sandalwood: oh yes, I agree!

[18:36] Holocluck Henly cringes

[18:36] Gabrielle Riel: If it's not your cup of tea? No worries! You can attend the tour or ignore it!

[18:36] Gabrielle Riel: Any questions about the Virtual Pioneers tour?

[18:37] Allyah Nayar: not from me.

[18:37] Gabrielle Riel: Let's get the hams out in action!

[18:37] Nola (nola.sapphire): lol

[18:37] Gabrielle Riel: I think we have enough. :-)

[18:38] Gabrielle Riel: Excellent! I thank you all so much for coming. This tea is officially adjourned!
